Ferret care

Ferrets are extremely social animals, who love to play with other members of Ferret caretheir species. They often lay on each other during sleep. We recommend that if you have ferrets as pets, as they are social animals to keep two or three ferrets at a time so as not expose them to solitude.

However, there is nothing wrong with owning one ferret, provided they receive portions of time, attention and play by its owner. Some ferrets also play with cats.

Ferrets need a range of care. Nails should be trimmed and their fur brushed with some regularity. They should visit the veterinarian at least once a year. Ignoring regular vetting may cause problems as the vet can recognizable over feeding or too much care by the owner resulting in unplanned harm that may harm a ferret without the knowledge of the owner. If a ferret is behaving differently than usual, it should also be taken to the vet.

It is also important to clean the ears with a special rescaling product for ferrets. Many people use baby oil or products originally designed for cats. However, it is always recommended to consult with your veterinarian before applying any product. Use a cotton swab to clean the ear carefully taking care not to introduce anything into the ear canal.

Ferrets should be vaccinated against canine distemper virus as it is fatal to them. Most countries also require vaccination against rabies, although no documented cases of transmission of rabies to humans by ferrets.
